SHS Drama is a self funded organization directed by Erin Sousa-Stanley. A 2019 Sondheim award winner for Best Direction in a Musical, Erin has been teaching the arts to our students for over 20 years. A veteran stage director and choreographer, she has worked for various theater groups throughout Connecticut, including East Lyme Regional Theater. Erin attended the Boston Conservatory of Music and graduated from the National Theater Institute.
Chris Stanley is the musical director for SHS Drama and has been a music director for over 20 years. The recipient of the Connecticut High School Musical Theater Award for Outstanding Musical Director for Into The Woods, Chris is also the choral director at Stonington High School where he directs 6 choirs, teaches piano and guitar.
Over the past 20 years, Stonington High School’s award-winning theater program has been loved by the community and has been recognized with numerous awards. The 2018/19 season alone earned SHS over 20 award nominations and three wins!
These students are not only talented in the performing arts, but are very involved at SHS and in our communities. They are honor students that take their academics very seriously and many are top of their class. They are athletes and student government representatives. They are very involved in the community, volunteering for organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross Youth Club, and Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. They are some of the hardest working and caring individuals with a deep passion for the arts.
Each year, nearly 100 students take part in Stonington High School Drama, either performing onstage, working stage crew, or set production and design.
SHS Drama has become a valuable platform for many students as they learn life skills, create precious memories that they carry into adulthood and have gone on to study at some of the most competitive colleges in the country.
Many of SHS alumni continue to be involved with the current theater program, helping to inspire students while building their skills and confidence. There are many alumni working professionally in the field, both on stage and behind the curtain, paving the way for the up and coming new performers at SHS!
